It started erupting in May 2008, and it is still spewing ash into the air. Before that, scientists say the last eruption was in 7420 BC. Though it is a magnificent site, I definitely feel badly for those people who live in Chaiten. Talk about getting a bad deal. There are some very beautiful things to see in South America.
